The Ugly Truth

“Today only” is never today only.

Panels don’t get more expensive at midnight. Why the kitchen-table deadline exists, and what it costs you.

By 1 min read

"This price is only good tonight." It is one of the oldest lines in home-improvement sales, and solar uses it constantly.

Why the deadline exists

Panels, inverters and racking do not get more expensive at midnight. The deadline exists because a buyer who sleeps on it, compares quotes and reads the contract is less likely to sign. The pressure is the product.

Your right to cancel

Under the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule, many sales made in your home give you three business days to cancel for a full refund, and the seller has to tell you that.[1] In Oregon, HB 4029 adds solar-specific rules governing disclosures before a sale or lease and required contract terms, and treats violations as unlawful trade practices.[2]

What to do instead

  • Take the paperwork and say you'll decide in a week.
  • Get the cash price and the $/W in writing.
  • Compare it against at least one other quote, including ours.

If the price goes up because you asked for time, you have learned what the first price was for.

Our price tomorrow

The same. Our price is the installer's published cost plus 15%. It changes only when the published cost table changes, and every version is on the pricing page.
